Behavioural activation is one of the most evidence-based tools in UK clinical practice for mild to moderate depression. The idea is counter-intuitive: when your mood is low, you do not wait to feel better before you act. You act first, in small, structured, scheduled steps, and the mood follows the action rather than the other way around. NICE (2022) recommends behavioural activation as a first-line psychological intervention for depression in adults in NG222.
This worksheet gives you a one-week planner for building behavioural activation into your days. It covers pleasure activities, achievement activities and routine activities, with space to score each one before and after. The scoring is important: it is how you catch yourself in the lie that “nothing feels better”.

When behavioural activation helps
Behavioural activation is particularly useful if your low mood has moved you into a pattern of doing less, which has deepened the low mood, which has moved you into doing even less. That loop is where most low mood becomes entrenched. The worksheet gives you a structured way to start reversing it, in increments small enough that your current mood can tolerate them.
- Low mood that has been going for weeks rather than days.
- Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy.
- A sense that nothing is worth doing.
- Withdrawal from people and activities.
- Mornings that are getting harder.
If any of what you are reading includes thoughts of self-harm or suicide, speak to your GP or NHS 111 (press 2 for mental health). Samaritans is available 24 hours a day on 116 123. If you are in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E.
When counselling helps alongside
Behavioural activation on paper is a strong start. Pairing it with counselling makes it more likely to stick, because the counselling can address the thoughts and patterns that keep pulling you back into withdrawal. At Thrive, sessions take place in person in Central Milton Keynes or online across the UK, including Bedford and Northampton. Individual sessions are £55 for 50 minutes. The contact page is the simplest way to start.
There are related pieces on whether what you are feeling is depression or emotional exhaustion and on signs of depression in men, both of which pair well with this worksheet.
